CATTLE
Cattle at Peine Farms
Peine Farms proudly added a cattle confinement facility in 2013, which reduced its carbon footprint and greatly improved the use of available nutrients in the manure.
The holding pit under the facility collects all manure from the cattle shed, and captures runoff from the outdoor lots and spilled feed from storage and loading areas.
Using a bi-annual application plan, the manure is emptied in October and is applied on roughly 400 acres. This completely eliminates the need for fertilizer in these acres for one year. The second year, half of the nutrient value is still in the soil, meaning only a half application of fertilizer is required.
